Edgewell Personal Care Company (NYSE: EPC) is expanding its voluntary recall of Banana Boat Hair and Scalp Sunscreen. The consumer-level recall initially had three batches of the recall but now has an additional one.
A review of the product found the presence of Benzene in the products. Unexpected levels of Benzene were discovered from the propellant that sprays the product. Benzene is not listed as part of the ingredients in the Banana Boat products, and its unexpected presence makes the products unsuitable for consumption.
The total number of recalled Banana Boat Hair and Scalp Sunscreen is now four, as outlined in the table below.

Only the products with the lot numbers listed in the table are being recalled. No other Banana Boat products are affected by this recall, and consumers may continue using them safely.
Risk Statement
Since Benzene is a human carcinogen, exposure to it can lead to life-threatening conditions such as cancer of the blood, blood disorders, and blood cancer of the bone marrow.
People get exposed to Benzene through inhalation, orally, or through the skin. Humans throughout the world are exposed to Benzene both indoors and outdoors from different sources.
According to an independent health assessment, daily exposure to Benzene from this product using exposure modelling guidelines is not expected to cause any health consequences.
Consumers can find sunscreen sprays in aerosol cans. They were distributed nationwide throughout the US via different retailers and online.
Edgewell is sending notifications to all its retailers and urging them to remove the affected products from the shelves.
Banana Boat will refund consumers who bought the affected products with their lot numbers indicated at the bottom of the bottle. Consumers are urged to discontinue using the affected products and discard them appropriately.
